Annual General Meeting & Panel Discussion 2021

The 2021 Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Friends Historical Association (CFHA) will be held virtually on Seventh Day, the 18th of Ninth Month (Saturday, September, 18th) 2021. Depending on your personal location and time zone, the Annual General Meeting will commence at a different time as follows:

Newfoundland and Labrador Time: 12:30 PM

    Atlantic Time: 12:00 PM

Eastern Daylight Savings Time (Toronto): 11:00 AM

    Central Time: 10:00 AM

    Mountain Time: 9:00 AM

    Pacific Time: 8:00 AM

All members are encouraged to attend. Let us make a virtue of meekness and include members from coast to coast!

To accommodate our keynote panel speakers we will follow the same sequence as last year, commencing with our keynote panel discussion led by Robynne Rogers Healey at the start of the AGM at the times indicated above. The keynote panel discussion will last 40-60 minutes including a Q&A followed by a 45-minute break. The formal business session will convene following the 45-minute break period; it is expected to be completed in approximately two hours. The documents-in-advance package including minutes of last year’s meeting, officer’s reports, etc. will be circulated later this month or in early September. Please review these documents when you receive them in order to facilitate the business meeting discernment and decisions.

    Keynote Panel

The authors of the recently released Quakerism in the Atlantic World, 1690-1830 will share their findings and reflect on the role of Canadian Quaker history in the larger history of Quakerism. Quakerism in the Atlantic World, 1690-1830 is the third volume in Penn State University Press’s New History of Quakerism series.

A 40% discount for this volume as well as others in the New History of Quakerism series will be available for those attending the AGM. Those attending the Keynote Panel will also have their names entered for a draw for a free copy of the book.

CFHA has been adapting to new technologies and is in a period of transition. We encourage all members to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to review activities of the past year and those proposed for the current and coming years.

Please RSVP here to receive a confirmation notification and the AGM Zoom link. Note that the Zoom details will only be available through the registration page.

Individuals not currently in membership are welcome to become members before the meeting, or to attend as guests subject to permission. Please contact [email protected] if you wish to attend as a guest, or if you require additional information.

  • Stephen W. Angell and Ben Pink Dandelion to speak at the CFHA Annual General Meeting

Stephen W. Angell and Ben Pink Dandelion to speak at the CFHA Annual General Meeting

    Exciting news!

The executive committee is thrilled to announce that our speakers for the CFHA Annual General Meeting to be held on September 26th will be Ben Pink Dandelion of the Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre in Bournville, England, and Stephen W. Angell of the Earlham School of Religion in Richmond, Indiana.

Ben and Steve have been instrumental in the explosion of interest in Quaker history and other aspects of Quaker studies in the past ten years. They have led the way in working with a number of university presses, and have encouraged scholarship in a way that has fundamentally changed the scholarly landscape in Quaker studies.

We have invited Ben and Steve to speak about their experience in reframing Quaker studies, the impact of the scholarship that is being done, and the ways that scholarship reaches both the academic community as well as interested lay researchers and well-read Friends. Along with our speakers we will inquire about the role for a group like the CFHA in this larger discussion, and ask how we through CFHA can better support the work of academic researchers, genealogists, and Canadian Friends.

We hope you will be able to join us for this important program. Ben and Steve will speak beginning at 11 a.m. Eastern time, and the business portion of the AGM will follow. Please RSVP to the link below:

Individuals not currently in membership are welcome to become members before the meeting, or to attend as guests. Please contact [email protected] if you wish to attend as a guest, or if you require additional information.

  • Co-Chair Update

    logo_transparent

Though Covid-19 has thrown our upcoming AGM a few curveballs, we’re excited at the prospect of having members join us virtually on Saturday, September 26th (11:00 AM EDST Toronto time) for the CFHA Annual General Meeting. All members are encouraged to attend, and guests may request to participate by writing to [email protected]. Perhaps a silver lining through all of this is the ability to accommodate members from all across North America for the first time, and we hope it allows more of you to participate.

The CFHA will circulate a ‘Documents in Advance’ package for members to review prior to the AGM. This allows our virtual meeting to run smoothly, as this package will include the typical reports and statements which have been submitted for review and approval at the AGM. Our meeting will also include a separate moderator to manage the media traffic and facilitate the work of the Co-Chairs.

At the time of writing, other items are in the works for the AGM, including the possibility of an interesting presentation following the AGM. Please continue to watch for additional details as they become available. Any questions or comments may be forwarded to [email protected].

  • Save the Date! AGM Planning Underway

    new logo

As set out in the Canadian Friends Historical Association governance, the Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held on a weekend towards the end of September. This year’s AGM will take place on September 26th, 2020. Please save this date!

We can expect some changes thanks to Covid-19. The main meeting room at Friends House in Toronto has been booked, but it is too early to know whether an in-person AGM will be possible. Look for updates in the coming weeks.

It is very likely that even if an in-person meeting is possible a virtual component will also be included. This will allow members from the Maritimes to the Pacific to take part in the proceedings.

We are striving to prepare year-end reports, minutes of last year, etc., into a ‘documents in advance’ package. This will be distributed far enough ahead of the meeting to facilitate efficient conduct of business and our typical friendly convivial gathering. We look forward to welcoming everyone in September.
