  • Latest Website Postings Update

The following is the list of postings of new minute book transcriptions and other documents which have been added to the CFHA website since the last issue of The Meetinghouse. This list includes new previously unavailable transcriptions of 13 meeting minute books. The list indicates the date of posting followed by the document title. Thanks are due to the transcribers and contributors Carman Foster, Doug Smith and Randy Saylor.

Transcribing is a rewarding and informative contribution to CFHA activities. Transcribers work at their own pace using images of original hand0written documents provided by the transcription coordinator. Basic guidance on the conventions and practices used is provided. Previous transcription experience is helpful but not essential, and new individuals are always welcome to join the group. If interested please contact [email protected].

  • CFHA Welcomes Allana Mayer and Chris Landry

We are very pleased to announce that CFHA has taken some bold and necessary steps and secured the assistance of Allana Mayer and Chris Landry on a part-time basis.

Allana will be upgrading the CFHA website and adding new member features and capability. Allana will also be assessing and rationalizing existing CFHA digital holdings, and developing a CFHA digital archive/repository and procedure to allow CFHA members undocumented personal historical Quaker material to be digitized and preserved for the future.

Chris Landry will provide needed administrative support for key CFHA membership, and member communications, and financial activity. He will facilitate data migration to the new website platform and facilitate blog communications. He will also support CFHA programs such as the ‘Who are the Quakers? Display panels, Founders Fund and others.

The AGM of the Canadian Friends Historical Association (CFHA) will be held once
again this year at Friends House, 60 Lowther Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M5R 1C7 on
Seventh Day, the 21 st of Ninth Month (Saturday, September21) 2019.

Registration will open at 9:00 AM in the Dining Room. The business meeting will commence at 9:30 AM.
All members are encouraged to attend. There is no charge to attend the business
meeting, but please register if you plan to attend so we have an idea about numbers.

The business meeting will be followed by lunch, rest and relaxation, and opportunities
for information sharing. Please note that considerable progress towards implementation

The afternoon program will conclude with the keynote presentation by long tine
member and transcription coordinator Randy Saylor. Please see the details off his
    presentation in this edition.

This year we will take a break from Friends House by going to a nearby establishment for delicious chef-prepared vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals. • AGM 2018 Highlights

What goes on at a CFHA Annual General Meeting? The morning business meeting satisfies the official requirement that CFHA provide financial and activity reports for the scrutiny, review and approval of the members. It is also the time when the proposed  slate of members willing to serve on the Executive committee in the coming year, and the draft budget, are reviewed and approved.

On the face of it, this may not sound very appealing or engaging. It is our experience, however, that the social aspect of meeting friends and fellow members in a convivial and meaningful exercise is an occasion many members look forward to, and register for early.

Food, fun, and friendly information sharing feature prominently in the day’s activities. Last year the AGM was held at Friends House in Toronto, and we will meet there again this year. The historic building with pleasant garden walk and paneled library and dining room proved very suitable to our needs last year.

The business session last year was conducted, as it typically is, “in the manner of Friends” meaning that decisions flow out of the shared discernment and resulting ‘sense’ of the meeting thus attained.

Food was a highlight of the day. Catering of the lunch and dinner meals was provided by the First Nations operated ‘Tea ‘N’ Bannock’ restaurant. AGM participants chose to enjoy either vegetarian or traditional bison, elk or trout dishes, accompanied by 3 Sisters soup, delicious wild rice and, we were told, “bannock presented by the world’s best bannock-maker”, Christina Nagoki.

Friendly information sharing took place throughout the day. Two occasions in particular deserve mention. First, the informal afternoon session held in the dining room included a helpful ‘Voice of the members’ round table discussion. This was followed by a very well-prepared presentation and demonstration on the latest internet search techniques of particular interest to researchers of Quaker family history and genealogy. This was provided and performed by members Heather Ioannou and Heather Somers, and was very much appreciated.

Second, the very detailed and well researched keynote presentation provided by Judy Pocock recounted the early 17th century formative years of the Quakers. The presentation outlined the political and social context of this period, and traced the development and gradual adoption of Quaker concepts, Testimonies and practices. This led to a lively Question and Answer session following the presentation, and occasionally during it.

Another great day of activities, fun, food and friendly sharing is planned once again for AGM 2019. Please see the details elsewhere in this issue, and please plan  to register early and participate.

  • CFHA Updates and Changes

Efforts during the past year to enhance CFHA member website capability are nearing completion and activation. Once implemented, members will be able to perform many actions via the website, which up until now required printing and mailing of forms and fees. The following is a summary of the changes which can be expected as the website upgrade project is implemented.

New member privileges will figure prominently going forward. Membership renewal and new memberships will be able to be accomplished on-line, as will payment and purchase of items which may be offered for sale. Website visitors and members will also be able to complete and submit various CFHA forms and program applicants on-line.

The new website will feature a regularly updated blog where we will post the types of materials you have been receiving in your newsletters and Journal. This will vastly increase our capacity to share important event information on a timely basis. We will also share articles of interest to our members. This includes historical articles, articles about genealogy and finding your Quaker ancestors, and primary sources that come to our attention. Importantly, the new website will offer members the opportunity to dialogue with one another. It will also give us the opportunity to connect members who want to share information, especially on genealogy. The new website capabilities will also facilitate an expanded CFHA footprint on various social media platforms.

Members only website section. The added website features will include a ‘members only’ capability. The specific access and benefits to be provided exclusively to members are still being determined, but anticipate that this will probably include a genealogy forum or “chat room” where members can ask questions and connect with others interested in Quaker ancestry. All website content that is now freely accessible, including transcriptions and back-issues of publications, will remain so. Additional information will be provided as soon as possible.

New Publication Policy. Please note that with the introduction of the CFHA blog neither the Canadian Quaker History Journal nor The Meetinghouse newsletter will continue as regular organization publications. In place of these intermittent publications members will receive timely and stimulating articles on the blog. Blog posts will include current event details and announcements and longer researched articles and transcriptions contributed by members and others. CFHA members will gain the benefits of greatly increased information flow and sharing plus the ability to comment on and participate in on-going and informative blog dialogues and discussions.

A number of CFHA members elected to receive and paid for printed copies of the Canadian Quaker History Journal issues that would normally have been published in membership years 2017-2018 and/or 2018-2019 respectively. For all such members we are pleased to announce the publication of a double issue (Edition number 82/83) will be available shortly. In the next six to eight weeks, printed copies of this last regular issue of the Canadian Quaker History Journal will be mailed to all members who ordered and paid for them. Pre-paid copies may also be provided for pick-up at the upcoming AGM at Friends House. Please see AGM 2019 details in this issue.

From time to time, CFHA may publish a special monograph that it considers of interest to its members. These monographs will be available for purchase on the website. . Commencing membership year 2019-2020 (Ninth Month 01, 2019 to Eighth Month 31, 2020) membership will include a member subscription to the CFHA on-line blog in place of the electronic or printed versions of publications.

Be sure to renew your membership for 2019-2020!  All members currently on record will have CFHA online privileges extended to them once the new website is activated. Among the first items to be posted and distributed to members via the blog will be the electronic version of the Canadian Quaker History Journal number 82/83. Other interesting and significant recent items are already lined up in preparation for posting to members. You will not want to miss these! Membership fees for the 2019-2020 membership year are unchanged from previous years. Please download and complete a membership renewal form available under the “Membership’ tab at www.cfha.info. Better yet, plan to attend and renew your membership at the AGM.
